Synopsis

The Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Piauí (PPGGEO/UFPI) is pleased to present Volume 9 of the Geography in Debate Collection. This collection reaffirms the Program's commitment to disseminating the results of research developed within its research lines, expanding contemporary debates in geographical science at the regional and national levels.

This volume, therefore, embodies the plurality of theoretical and methodological perspectives and thematic diversity that characterizes the production of PPGGEO/UFPI, reaffirming its academic and social relevance. By bringing together knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, the work contributes to strengthening critical reflection and professional practice in Geography, serving as a reference source for researchers, professors, students, and others interested in understanding geographic space and its multiple dimensions.

Author Biographies

Antonio Cardoso Façanha, Federal University of Piauí (UFPI)

He has been a Professor-Researcher in the Geography Department at UFPI since 1991. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Geography (UECE/1988), a specialization in Northeast Brazil: regional and environmental issues (UFC/1990), a specialization in Remote Sensing (UNESP/1991), a Master's degree in Geography (UFPE/1998), and a Doctorate in Geography (UFPE/2009). He is currently an Associate Professor IV at the Federal University of Piauí, having developed studies in the area of ​​Geography, with an emphasis on Urban Geography, Regional Geography, Geography of Piauí, and Geography Education. He participates as leader of the Research Group entitled “Regional and Urban Studies Group [GERUR]” linked to CNPq/UFPI. He was Coordinator of the Master's Program in Geography at UFPI during the following periods: 2011/2013 and 2017/2019. He was a Professor in the Master's Program in Development and Environment [PRODEMA] at UFPI [2015 to 2021]. He was the Deputy Coordinator of the Specialization Course (lato sensu) in Urban Planning and Socio-environmental Management of Cities at UFPI. Currently, he is a Permanent Professor in the Master's and Doctoral Programs in GEOGRAPHY/UFPI.

Bartira Araújo da Silva Viana, Federal University of Piauí (UFPI)

PhD in Geography from IGC / UFMG (2009-2013). Master's degree in Development and Environment from TROPEN / UFPI (2005-2007). Specialist in Research for Geography Teaching from the Federal University of Piauí (2001-2003). Bachelor's degree in Geography from the Federal University of Piauí (1994-2000). Currently a full-time professor (Associate II), working in the Geography Course Coordination at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) (since 08/21/2008). Member of the permanent staff of the Postgraduate Program in Geography - PPGGEO/Master's in Geography (since 08/2016) and PhD in Geography (since 2025). Has experience in the field of Geography, with emphasis on Teaching Geography, Environmental Analysis, Geography of Industry and Services, Biogeography, Geography of Tourism and Urban Geography, working on the following themes: Teacher training and teaching of
geography, environmental education, sustainable development, mining, environmental impacts,
city, industry, commerce and services, socio-environmental responsibility, verticalization, segregation,
social agents, spatial forms and processes, urban space of Teresina. Member
of the research groups: GERUR (UFPI), GEODUC/NUPEG (UFPI) and GAAE (UFPI), linked to
CNPq. Full member of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Piauí (IHGPI) since 08/15/2025.

Gustavo Souza Valladares, Federal University of Piauí (UFPI)

He holds a degree in Agronomy, a Master's degree, and a Doctorate in Soil Science from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (2003). He is currently an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Piauí. He is a professor in the Master's program in Geography at UFPI and in the Doctorate program in Development and Environment at UFPI in a network. He completed a Post-Doctorate at the Institute of Geosciences at Unicamp. Between 2002 and 2008, he was a researcher at Embrapa in the area of ​​soil genesis and classification. Between 2009 and 2011, he was a professor at UFC. He has experience in the area of ​​Soil Science, with an emphasis on Soil Genesis, Morphology and Classification and Geoprocessing, mainly working on the following topics: pedological mapping, soil chemistry, management, organosol, geoprocessing, soil quality, and agricultural suitability.
