Edit Rachel de Queiroz: crossings of the novel The Fifteen
Synopsis
Rachel de Queiroz has been re-created over the years by hands other than her own. The same is true of her first novel, O Quinze, which, in addition to consolidating a powerful narrative about the drought, establishes as an author a young woman who had not yet reached twenty years of age. Her life spanned more than ninety years, with developments in other forms of writing, as she dedicated herself to journalism, chronicles, and translation. The young author became a woman with a solid and recognized career, and was always accompanied by that first novel. Gilberto Gilvan Souza Oliveira's work documents the various creations of the little book and the author, over the years, by the hands of cover designers, illustrators, and proofreaders. It highlights the book's dialogues with other texts about the drought, with the author's own books, and with those who thought and wrote about literature in Brazil. And, most importantly, with those who made the material existence of a text possible: the editors. At this point, the historian shows how it is unavoidable to analyze Rachel without thinking about “Casa”, as the publishing house where she worked for decades was called: José Olympio.
In addition to the pleasure of reading the writer's work, this study proposes to discover the pleasure in following the life of O Quinze, the book object, over the decades in its various editions.
