GAM-demia: Experiences with Autonomous Medication Management groups in the COVID-19 pandemic
Keywords:
Pandemic- COVID-19, Public health, Autonomous medication management, PsychosocialSynopsis
Many people have a new habit in their daily routines that involves taking white, blue, and orange pills from their pill packs and taking them in the morning, afternoon, and/or evening. We are talking about psychotropic drugs, psychotropic drugs, or psychiatric medications, as they are known. The medicalization of life is a reality worldwide. Social medicalization is a term conceptualized by Illich, for whom medicalization implies some harm to health, with a consequent reduction in autonomy and competence in autonomous management to face and manage the oscillations and vicissitudes of life, with an increase in dependence on professional health care (Illich, 1981). The tendency towards medicalizing care in medical practice brings consequences that include clinical damage to the individual, dissemination of passive behaviors and demands for professional care for common life situations, and a reduction in people's ability to manage their experiences involving suffering and pain (Illich, 1981). Medicalization can occur under any medical rationale and, in this work, the discussion focuses on the place of medicalization in mental health treatment.
