Padre Lira made of his Historical practice, understood as Teaching, Research and Writing, a kind of altar. An altar on which the past of the city of Sobral was immolated, many times resurrected, so many times transformed into the Present. Occupying strategic spaces such as schools, universities, radio and newspapers, the historian priest consecrated the historical discussion in the city, especially from his Column Nossa História, written for 11 years in the pages of the newspaper Correio da Semana (1918), wishing, as he wrote, speak “louder to the heart of the people of Sobral”, thus, it became common to open the newspaper weekly and hear the priest militating in favor of Sobral and its History, its memories, its founding myths, its genealogies, local heroes, without ceasing to question the uncomfortable presence of outsiders, bold foreigners who besieged the city and rallied in its trenches. From his altar-history, in the folds of his unmistakable cassock, piloting his tired and meek wasp, in the fringes of his writings, his bibliographical presence awakens in today's historical production the senses of the heart and reason, pointing to the need to superdimensioning historical activity, as the priest did one day, occupying spaces such as newspaper pages, radio waves, knowing that the challenge these days is greater, due to the existence of various media that must be occupied by historians. Therefore, the objective of the Padre Lira Academic Series is to diversify and publicize our writings on History, Culture and Memory in Sobral and Region, and even though we wish to speak "louder to the heart", our endeavor has the clear intention of questioning the sanctified place of the Past, Memory and History.
